Mamata Banerjee, Omar Abdullah to hold high-stakes meet at Nabanna on July 10
Severe waterlogging was reported in several areas of Kolkata after heavy rainfall on Monday, disrupting daily activities and traffic movement. According to civic officials, around 630 mm of rainfall was recorded within seven hours, leading to accumulation of water in many low-lying parts of the city. North and Central Kolkata were among the worst affected. Despite preparations, the sudden volume of rain overwhelmed the drainage infrastructure.
Tarak Singh, Mayor-in-Council member in charge of the Drainage Department, visited the Palmerbazar storm water flow pumping station in Ward 57 on Tuesday and reviewed the ongoing drainage work. The station, which drains water from significant portions of North and Central Kolkata, has three pumps functioning while one remains non-operational due to repairs. Singh termed the situation “unfortunate” and said, “I am saddened by the inconvenience caused, but we must understand several areas received over 100 mm of rain, which created unexpected pressure.”
He added that drainage operations are being carried out through both pumps and canals. Due to tidal conditions, lock gates could not be opened, delaying water discharge. Singh noted that if the intensity of rainfall reduces and lock gates are opened by afternoon, water outflow will improve. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has taken alternative steps to speed up drainage and officials are maintaining constant monitoring to restore normal conditions.
